Dust accumulation inside AC...

I know we use filters to clean the air inside the AC unit...but in our case, some stuff has or had made it up in there anyway, and this Morning I looked up and you could see the 'matter' kind of stuck around on the inside (what looks like a radiator wall). Tomorrow I plan to hook up a 'nuclear' powered shop vac with a very small hose extention to suck it out. Am I doing the right steps or is there some other thing I need to know? What is essentialy (sp) is - is micro fine dust-like lint.
