The A/C on my 1976 31 as been replaced at some point with a Duo-Therm unit. The PO just put some wood blocks to make up for the roof curve. Where would I get the proper support bracket (if it is even available for a Duo-Therm)? I still havnt even made sure the unit blows cold and if it doesnt what is the best replacement unit? Thanks in advance for any information.
There's two things that need fixing to mount the newer Duotherm on a curved roof.
1. You need to insert wood or aluminum blocking between the inner and outer skin. This blocking needs to be attched to ribs front and back to support the weight of the unit and keep the roof from caving in.
2. To match the outside curve of the roof, there is a curved plastic pan sold by airstream. The function is to direct condensate water to the drain hose that runs between the inner and outer wall. This piece is optional, and I don't know if Airstream sells the one for your model A/C unit. The current tray fits the Penguin Low Profile A/C model, made by Duotherm.
If you want the a/c blocks to conrom to the curvature of the roof, you will need to remove them, and sand/chisel them away until they approximate the curvature. There are no curved brackets for Airstream. I had this problem when we got a new unit iunstalled in our Argosy, and to this day it still has a small flat spot on the roof at the air conditioner.
