Dometic Duo Therm Penguin 13500 problems

Hello all,

I have a 2011 25' International...

I feel lucky not to have something go wrong with it every other week. I have a list of things that have failed since I bought it from Colonial. But lets not indulge...about all the problems and of that horrible dealership..

To the current issue...

I have a Dometic Penguin 13500btu A/C w Heat Pump....I dont think I've ever used the heat pump...I winterized the trailer last winter and this winter I've been using the furnace..

The heat pump does not work...I feel only cold air blowing from the unit and I can hear the compressor turn on in waves....but no heat. I am currently at a cg in georgia w 30a hookup.

The other strange thing is that when when I switch over to A/C, it trips the breaker as soon as the compressor starts to kick on...

I have very little knowledge of hvac...has anyone come across this issue, know of whats going on, and/or have a solution?

Much appreciated.

RJM

Well first of all does the unit have an auxillary heater strip? A heat pump won't do much when the temp drops below the 40's. If you are switching from heat to AC without letting the unit sit for a bit you could be experiencing high head pressure. It is never good to turn a compressor off and then back on again. It is hard on them to start when the pressures are high right after it is turned off. Heat pumps will tend to ice when it is cold and damp outside. I am not sure how your unit works but the home units defrost themselves buy running the unit in AC mode while heating the cold air with a heater strip. Since both the compressor and heater strips use a lot of power this may not be possible with a 20A circuit. If it is below 40F outside use the furnance or a heat only position if it has one. If you have the choice of heat, heat pump, and AC pick heat.
