Digital Thermostat

Has anyone changed to a digital thermostat for their heating system? If so, what brand did you change to. Took my Atwood thermostat to Home Depot yesterday and no one there could tell me if any of their digital thermostats would work in a trailer.

I use my trailer year around so i don't winterize it by draining all the fluids from the lines. Instead I turn the heater on and set the thermostat to the lowest setting which is 50 degrees. Needless to say I am burning thru propane rather quickly on cold evenings when the temperatures are not at or below freezing.

Might not work

You may have trouble using a digital unit. I am not an HV/AC expert or even amateur but I do know that the standard house furnace uses 24 volts A.C. for control of the system. That is basically the signal from the thermostat to the furnace that tells it when to turn on and off.
There is usually a small relay in the digital thermostat that does this and it is powered separately from the thermostat (which is usually powered bu a couple of AA batteries.

The furnace in a trailer probably only uses 12 volts D.C. to run so that may not be high enough to operate that relay. Besides the trailer operates (at least ours does) on a 2 wire system where the house operates on a 4 wire system to run heat in the standard home.

There is another thread I remember where one forum member purchased a battery powered thermostat and had pictures of the install. I can't remember who it was right off hand.

I stand corrected. This is good info (and a reminder for me to use the search feature more). I think I will replace our thermostat as well!

Pick up a "Just Right" digital thermostat made by Hunter. WalMart sells these for about $20. I used one to replace the Atwood junk that came on my 2001 Safari. Worked great and if you don't like it, its always returnable.

Here's my thread on the topic.

I put in a Hunter Set n Save II, same one I use in the house. 2 AA batteries. Works great, very even heat although 2 degree spread from set temp.

Yeah, it really made a difference in our Safari. The batteries will last at least a year or more, so its not a big issue that you aren't tied to a transformer.
