Crazy A/C Idea

My wife and I just bought a 1968 Globetrotter without A/C. Here in Kansas, it will be necessary. At this time, we are not interested in original restoration - just fix it up to camp in.

The old fridge is gone - being the redneck/engineer of the family, I am thinking about putting a window A/C unit where the old fridge used to be. My theory here is that once closed off to the interior, the heat would convect up the old fridge vent and then make-up air would be drawn throught the vent in the floor. This would provide cheap A/C and no ugly unit on top. The potential pitfalls are:
  • Is there enough vent area to efficiently remove the heat? I would probably use a 6,000 to 8,00 BTU/hr window unit. The outside access door could be replaced with a vented unit to allow additional make up air.
  • Would the cold air blowing on the street side gaucho be too uncomfortable?
  • Loss of interior storage area.
  • Noise.
Has anyone tried this? Is it just a crazy idea and should I just settle for a roof mount unit? Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

Whatcha gonna do about a fridge? It is one of the big conveniences of having a trailer IMO ~

Well, since we also not have a range and oven, I'd probably place the new electric fridge where the oven would normally go. Good thought, though!
