Cracks around screws in AC shroud?

My 2002 Classic seems to have developed cracks around the screws in the air conditioning shroud.

Was giving Vanna her spring wash and noticed this condition; am I headed for losing the shroud?????

It has the "Airstream Duo Therm heat pump" decals on the sides....decals have been peeling since day one of ownership but I would like to keep my trailer nearly as I can "factory" equipped.

Should I research new shrouds? Is it just a matter of time and a strong head-wind?

Air Conditioner covers

I believe the covers are made from ABS. Ultra violet exposure, from the sun, degrades the rubber in the compound. I painted my old 1977 shroud to protect it. You need to get some what they call fender washers to spread the stresses out and prevent the shroud from completely coming off due to minor impact. The increased size of the washers will hardly be noticeable.

Thank you for replying Dwightdi....I did put washers on all four screws....just round ones I had on hand.

What is a fender washer?

The problem is not just around the screws. Cracks have gone in straight lines from the screws to the corners. I tried crazy glue but all I have is glue on my fingers. I guess ABS is not crazy glue suceptible

Not being an engineer exactly I still have an opinion.......I think that stress is put on the shroud at those points.....was it screwed too tight.....did it fit?

Anyway, I don't look forward to going without a shroud.

I do keep my trailer in covered storage but it does get rather warm here in Tucson.

Kistler,
Fender washers are big washers with a small hole in them, for example a 1/4" hole with a 2" washer. The help spread the load out.

What I did with my A/C shroud was pretty extreme, but my shroud was in bad shape, and almost unobtainable.
I removed the shroud, put fiberglass mat down in the inside parts (underneath) where it was cracking, and put resin over the mat. After it had all dried, I painted the exterior of the shroud with Kool Seal elastometric coating. After it had dried, I then re-installed the shroud. It lasted the rest of the life of the A/C unit.

Dometic A/C shrouds

OEM Shrouds are available for almost any Dometic roof unit. If you have trouble finding them, let me know and I can get them for you. Give me your model and serial # and I can get a price for you.

shroud cracks

Loctite has a clear epoxy in the double syringe applicator for plastic and states on the package that it can be used on ABS also .I used it on my AC shroud. Put a bead on the crack andDrill a 1/16 hole at the end of the crack. Then if you want to sand the cover and paint it. I bought my loctite at lowes. It says plasti under loctite on the label.Good luck.
