COSTAR Carbon Monoxide alarm service life

When replacing the battery in the COSTAR CO detector which was factory installed in my '06 Intl CCD, I noticed a sticker on the unit stating "REPLACE BY 2010/NOV". Unclear as to whether this was referring to the battery or not, I first referred to the manual. The manual states to replace the battery annually. Hmmm...so I sent e-mail to Quantum (Manuafacturer of COSTAR) for clarification.

They responded that the alarm itself has a service life and should be replaced before the date on the alarm, FYI.

Smoke alarms also have a "replace by" date. Usually it's 10 years on one of those.
