Catalytic Heater for $100???

Yes, that's right. I was in a local ACE Hardware store and sitting on a shelf - all by itself - was this heater with a $100 price tag on it.

Now this one is small for our trailer size of 27 feet but for 100 bucks, I'll replace our old, antiquated unit.

I searched online and found this unit on Olympians site for $299. I think it was a good deal, don't you???

It looks like the exact same one the PO put in my previous trailer, the Argosy Minuet. It worked like a charm.

Good. we don't get TOO cool here so hopefully it will do the job. We did use our old one but had to run it on low because it puts out too much heat.

If you want to part with your old heater and still have the stove kicking around I am interested in both.
It does get TOO cold in Alaska. More heat!!!

This is the same heater the P.O. mounted in the bathroom of our just aquired '66 Tradewind. The original furnace under the kitchen sink was removed and the 'holes' patched. When I asked the P.O. if he missed the furnace he said no, "That little thing back there is toasty." We shall see.

What is your elevation above sea level at Sierra Highlands? ... and at places you like to camp? The box includes the word "Safety" which suggests to me this model catalytic heater, earlier than the current Wave version, might have an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) in it. Read the fine print to see if it does. If it does, then do more research to learn the elevation at which the ODS disables the heater. I don't know any of the specifics, just the general concept that ODS equipped appliances often don't work at higher elevations.

My understanding is that ODS's are calculated to work at sea level -- that their base level reading for oxygen is taken at sea level -- but often turn off the heater at higher elevations where the oxygen is naturally thinner due to nature and not due to depletion by burning in a confined space. The ODS doesn't care why the oxygen is thinner, just that it is. If you camp at 6,000 feet elevation or above (a pure guess on my part), this heater may not work unless you defeat or modify the ODS.

I bought and installed a new Wave 6 for my 19' Globe Trotter because the Wave series does not have ODS's and do operate at the higher elevations which I will encounter in the Rocky Mts.

Thanks for the heads up. It is an Oxygen Depletion Sensor model. Although I didn't think about it at the time we rarely camp at elevations above 5000 feet (with one exception) and have not had a problem with the cold the few times we have been above that level.

I still will replace the old heater as some of the surface padding is missing on the old one - courtesy of the local mouse population. So I don't trust that heater. Besides we have only used it once.

I will look into the sensor and see what I need to do to defeat it if needed - just in case.
