Carrier AirV recall
FYI,
In Feb's issue in Trailer Life, page 20 Carrier is recalling certains AC's due to faulty heat assemblies. Manufactured from May 07 to June 09.
I thought these were good units.

Haven't seen it yet, but they "are" good units.
Things happen.
At least the AC's won't kill someone like the Toyota, Fords and GM vehicles have.

As the owner of a recently installed AirV (06-2009) I was interested in seeing what the recall was all about. According to Justia Auto Recalls it is more serious than first suspected:
Make : CARRIER Model : AIRV CEILING ASSEMBLY Year : Build Dates : 0000-00-00 - 0000-00-00 NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 09E053000 Date Owner's Notified: 0000-00-00 Date Received by ODI:Date Added to Database: 2009-09-02 Manufacturers Involved: CARRIER CORPORATION Manufacturer's Responsible for the Recall: CARRIER CORPORATION Manufacturer Campaign Number: Component: EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:AIR CONDITIONER
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 16000
Summary:
CARRIER IS RECALLING CERTAIN AIRV CEILING ASSEMBLIES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 2007 AND 2009, P/NOS 99-00469-11, 99-00469-02, AND 99-00469-17, SOLD TO BE INSTALLED AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON VARIOUS RECREATIONAL VEHICLES AND ALSO SOLD AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT. THE HEATER ELEMENT IN THESE ASSEMBLIES MAY BE DEFECTIVE WHICH COULD CAUSE THE UNIT TO CREATE SMOKE OR SPARKS.
Consequence:
THIS DEFECT COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
Remedy:
EACH VEHICLE MANUFACTURER WILL FILE A DEFECT REPORT AND REMEDY PLAN FOR THEIR VEHICLES WHICH INCLUDED THE AFFECTED AIRV CEILING ASSEMBLIES AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT. CARRIER WILL NOTIFY THE OWNERS WHO PURCHASED THE ASSEMBLIES AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT. THE AIRV UNITS WILL BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING OCTOBER 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THEIR VEHICLE MANUFACTURER OR CARRIE AT 1-800-450-2211. Report Initiator: MFR E Report Regulation Part Number: Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number:
Notes:
OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 'TTY 1-800-424-9153', OR GO TO http://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV . NO YEAR 2009-09-02
So ... probably a good idea to contact Carrier, huh?

Somehow I missed this information when it was posted two years ago.
This past weekend we were using the Carrier heat strip to keep the trailer warm as the night time temperatures were getting into the 20s. At around 2am my wife woke me and told me to turn the unit off. I looked up and there were sparks blowing out of the front of the unit and I shut it down immediately.
Later that day I pulled the heat coil (1.6KW) out of the unit and could see where the element was breaking down and causing splatter marks on the metal frame.
Carrier was notified and called me the next day. I gave them the numbers on the unit and they verified that my unit was part of the recall and they are shipping the new designed element to me.
I urge everyone with one of these units to verify that it is not part of the recall...

Update:
The new heat strip arrived yesterday. It looks just like the old unit and has the same 1600 watt rating, but a different part number. 10 minutes to install and a 30 minute burn to test it.
