Basement / Inside AC Unit

Anybody knows of a good AC Unit that could be installed inside a camper, vs on the roof?
It’s only for a 20ft camper, therefore does not need to be a large unit.

any advice is greatly appreciated

There is an active thread right now on this Forum regarding split unit air conditioners.

This little unit is pretty easy to mount. If could go on the tongue but would need some really good outdoor air flow if mounted in a compartment.

The hoses use bayonet fittings like RV tank drains, so it can be removed when not in use.

this unit might be interesting, but i do not like to install anything on the outside, as i want to keep the original look of the camper.
thats while I’m looking for something to install on the inside, but do not want to use your standard window unit

You really only have two options: self contained or split unit.

If you want nothing on the roof or otherwise visible on the outside of the trailer, you will have to ...

- mount the condensing component of the split system in an isolated compartment. or

- mount the entire self contained unit like the one above, in an isolated compartment


Either way there would have to be considerable outside air flow into and out of the compartment

The Roadchief site says it has a discrete AC unit but I don't know what it is as yet.

We built a window ac unit into a cabinet and vented it through storage compartment door. Sit in a drain pan and we open storage door when in use. Quieter than overhead and cheaper. In the 57 we plan a portable inside house type unit built into cabinet.

Take a look at what Becky did on the rescue/rehab of a Bambi that she recently completed.

Mounting the ac unit in a cabinet is great for appearances, but I believe it makes it real difficult for the unit to perform as well as one that is out in the open. There is just no free lunch. Do you want your Airstream to be cool on the inside or do you want it to look cool.

I removed my Armstong AC unit from the roof because it looked terrible, ruined the looks of the Airstream, and it vibrated a lot and was noisy. I now carry a small window unit with me and install it in a window if I really need it. I have actually never used it camping. I have only used it when the Airstream is at home and I am working on it during the heat of the day. It actually does not look too bad installed, is quiet and I can even operate it using only my 1,000 watt Honda genny. I have a thread on the installation.

The ClimateRight unit, 5,000 btu/hr, referenced by Wayward, looks like a reasonable way to heat and cool a small trailer.

I look forward to learning how the Bowlus Roadchief AC system is designed.

I couldn't find another post that I thought was very sensible - a mountable window unit. The poster opened the rear window (not a Herr - one that opens the full pane ) and made an "awning" that just laid on the window and hung down the sides. The screen had to be removed and he had a 2 piece wood surround that fit the inside of the frame and the outside of a very small window unit's box. The unit is basically invisible and can be set up in about 5 minutes. The A/C unit itself is stowed in it's original box in the truck when not in use.

Not sure if this thread is still active. Some units like the RoadChief utilize a through the wall permanent style ac / heat heat-pump like the frigidair units. These units are either have a louver panel installed on the starboard or port side or unit inside is mounted on the floor and their is a vent system through the belly pan.
