Armstrong TR21-12

I was about to swap out the original TR21-12 A/C but decided to test the unit first. Surprisingly even through the shroud is in very bad shape and lichen was growing near the fan, the unit is working and cooling very well (i.e., 20 deg F drop). This is the original A/C, with fan motor, compressor and capacitors all original. Although a gamble, I am strongly considering just replacing the shroud and leaving the Armstrong in service. Does anyone know if the shroud can be replaced with the Inland RV shroud without taking the entire unit off the roof? Also, if the unit has not seen much use in it's past, is there high likelihood of failure of any particular part since it is 40 years old? Too bad the shipping cost is extremely high, more than the cost for an entire 140 lb replacement on a pallet.

I have an old Armstrong on top of my 68 Trade Wind that cools great. I too need a shroud but I could not see spending 1/2 the price of a new a/c for a shroud to make a 40 year old unit look better. I have learned to just overlook the square shape.

Have the original Armstrong on my 1978...works great. Shroud starting to crack in spots but plan on repairing with fiberglass and painting it.

All of our shrouds do not require movement of the AC in any way.

And do the the shrouds come with the metal screen on the back and the fan guard on the top?

No they do not.

Transfer those parts from the old, to the new.
