Question Air Conditioner removal

I am looking for information on what is required to remove an overhead air conditioner, and any known methods (factory or otherwise) for covering and sealing the hole in the roof; also any estimates of labor that would be involved. (for a mid 1960's Caravel) Thank you!

You should search on the member "pattersontoo", as he has detailed how to chuck one off. We have a mobile scaffolding that goes up five feet, we had both of us on that and then had a ladder leaned against the AS, and slid it down the ladder.

As for "filling" the hole, a vent is appropriate if the hole is not too big. If you aren't concerned about 100% original, Fantastic would be really nice. Otherwise, get a piece of aluminum and rivet and seal it that way, then do something on the inside, like a light fixture, overhead media center, mobile, etc....

Why?

Please reference the thread "Why'd he do that?"

It would be cheaper to replace the AC with a low profile Penguin unit. This does not overwhelm the small size of the Caravel, can be modified with a heat strip and it is an A/C...a quiet one at that. Resale will be better too. Try it...you'll like it.

AMaxi or Fan-tastic Vent Fan will fill the hole too. Inside molding covers the old AC marks...with a little cleaning up involved.

While on the subject of air conditioners, I recently installed a Carrier AirV Low Profile on a '73 Safari. This unit is so low, you almost miss seeing it when you look at the trailer . Came with heat strip and is a very well made unit. Installation is a snap, too.

Just a thought!

you can see how I did my vents at

http://www.airforums.com/forum...ent-23318.html

and replaced the A/c at

http://www.airforums.com/forum...tos-20568.html

wish I had known about the low profile units at the time, but that's history.

Lightbulb More then one way

The A/C hoist is by far the best why to go, but the hoist I found was too big, too heavy, too expensive and too far away. So I tock the bumper off of the pickup and the rest is history. I replaced both A/C's with the Coleman 13.5 power savers, there running load is rated at 10 amps. I'm hoping that they can both run off the 4 kw Onan, haven’t done the rewiring to check it out yet. So far I have been pleased with then.

Bill,

Forgive me, but I covet your hoist!! I usually rent an air conditioner hoist (sort of a manual hi-rise fork lift) for these jobs when I'm in FL, but it's a little hard to carry one with you while on the road!!

PS: Watch the starting surge on those A/C units!!

Reminds me of my 66 Mustang rebuild days and the search for the right oak tree to pull the engine and tranny out, this looks like a cool (no pun intended) way to do the AC job. I will file this away for the fall when I do mine.
THANKS

If you have access to a fork lift, that's a good way to get it out. My husband & son were both up there & nephew operated them to right over the hole. Pulled it right out! The new one went on just about as easily.

Now if you are cheap like me, use a ladder between the AS roof and an suv roof, borrow a friends suv, might want some cardboard on the roof to protect it unless you borrow it from someone you don't like. (I used my old boat, but that's just me) That gets it to the roof of the suv, now ya can use the same ladder to slide it off the roof No, I'm not going to suggest silver duck(TM) tape to fill the hole...or am I

Hi Michael,

I have dropped the manual trans in my 56 Chevy in a ditch, in high school.

I knew a guy that rebuilt the straight 6 in an old International Harvester pickup by removing the hood, driving it out into tall hay, and pulling it over on its side with a tractor. It was just like it was on an engine stand. When done, pulled it back on its feet. No damage. A little thicker sheet metal back then.

I am making notes for the AC replacement I plan to do, too!
