Question AC Unit

I installed a new Dometic low profile AC unit last year. The new unit was put to good use this year in Florida and worked well, except my neighbors sail it was to loud. Also my wife complained it was very loud inside the coach and it was.The unit works perfectly, talked with Dometic technical department and they said the high efficiency unit is noisy .Need some expert advise on what to do. Thanks good wrench.

I too think this unit is loud as I walk a campground and compare. It is advertised as a15K unit but look at the plaque on it and the Dometic documentation it says 13.5K. I suspect they speed up the fans and such and this accounts for the noise. This is my hypothesis.

For the gadget-minded, Radio Shack sells a sound meter that is simple and very easy to use. I have used it at work to identify and replace noisy office equipment and at home to accurately identify exhaust fans.

All RV rooftop a/c are loud. The low profile, high capacity Dometic is certainly not the most quiet of the bunch.

If it's just compressor and fan noise there's not much of anything that you can do about it, except to be glad that you don't have a heat pump (they're worse).

If there is a rattle then chances are something's loose. I get up on the roof and pull the covers off of mine every 2 years to look for loose items, broken cable ties, blockages, etc.

Another option that's free or low-cost (depending on the app chosen) is a sound-meter app on a smart phone. This probably has less definitive reading, but with the same phone and app results should be comparable from one reading to the next. I just wouldn't want to take a reading with my Android phone and compare it to a reading made with a precise, calibrated dedicated sound meter.

Yup, we have one. Yup, they're noisy. Are they the worst on the market? Nope. Not the worst we've ever had, either. We don't use it unless we really need it. And when we need it, I'm grateful for it. I don't think it's noisy on the outside, although I know when it's running and I'm outside.

Just got my a/c's installed. Quiet and you can feel the air from the rear BR to the drivers seat. Click image for larger version
