AC keeps tripping breaker - solved
About 3 weeks ago I put a replacement fan motor in a Coleman Mach III. The AC ran great while outside temperatures were 85 & lower. The air coming out of the vents didn't seem as cold as it used to be. I just figured the new motor ran faster & was more efficient. When the temps got hotter, the breaker would trip. I replaced the breaker as it was original to the 1976 SOB. I also replaced the 2 capacitors while changing the motor. 1st breaker trip would be at 15 minutes, After a couple of resets, the time was reduced to 10 minutes, I was checking everything electrical that I could think of.
While up on the roof, I spilled the beverage I was also working on. The liquid ran straight for the tools I had laid out. after picking them out of the liquid, I put my hand near the shroud to let the air dry my hand. Huh, there was no air coming out although I could see the fan spinning. The fan blade was turning in the right direction.
It turns out I had put the fan blade too far into the metal shroud to do any good. It was just blowing the air around inside the shroud & not cooling the AC radiator. I moved the fan blade so it sat in the shroud opening, but 2/3 of the blade was on the outside.
Wow, now i get a lot of hot air blowing out of the shroud. The inside air is just as cold as I remember it. And the breaker hasn't tripped once. If you go to replace a motor, take a picture of measurement to make sure the blade goes where it belongs.
