AC Drain Tube Material

I am ready to install a new drain tube for the new AC unit we installed and I was looking at some Toro "Funny" pipe I have laying around. Looks like a good fit, then I start thinking about bacteria ... and such... what would be the down side of using the "Funny" pipe

I just replaced the tubing on my 2009 Flying Cloud. The factory stuff was so brittle it came apart even trying to remove it. I found a piece of black polyethylene tubing. This very thin, I think it is used in the irrigation industry in the drip tube systems. It works well and the life of it will easily surpass the white corrugated tubing which A/S puts on. Now I am talking about the drain for the fridge. Sorry, but perhaps my tip will get you to thinking what is out there.

Thanks for the reply Tom, the Toro pipe I have is irrigation pipe, just a little thicker than the normal stuff

I'm guessing the irrigation pipe would probably work. A good friend who's also an Airstream restorer and factory-authorized service provider suggested PEX for my 28' Argosy since I'm going to have some inner skin loose, so that's another option.

Unless the "funny pipe" irrigation tubing can't tolerate a little bleach-water poured down it from time to time, bacteria shouldn't be any more problem than it would with any other tubing.

Just for information: today I went to install my "funny pipe", found that the wall thickness of the tubing is too thick to go thru the oval shaped holes in the framing.

Ended up going to Home Depot and picking up some 1/2" Pex, so no irrigation pipe for my Safari

I opened the fridge compartment and saw the drain line broken completely in half. It crumbles easily. Not good stuff.


I removed it and slipped a piece of flexible conduit from Lowes over the fitting.


I am not exactly sure why Airstream routed it through the coils.


I re-routed it down the side of the compartment, outside the coils.
