A/C scare-weirdness

Greetings.

Today I went up to visit the 19' CCD to kiss, love and fondle, as well as some pre-lim season stuff.

I re-installed the two interstate bats. Checked out furnace, fridge on gas, stove, fans etc.

During this time I also had the AS plugged into my Honda 2000 to give it a workout as well.

I dumbly decided to try out the heat strip on the AC unit. The lights dimmed and I immediately shut off the unit. Everything seemed OK until I (dumbly) decided to try just turning the AC to FAN only.

When I did this, absolutely noth happened, no fan motor, nada...

I checked and reset the circuit breakers, still nothing.

I then unplugged the AS from the Honda, and plugged it into shore power. (I know, I know, but I want to use my little honda). Still no luck.

I took out the filrters in the AC and pulled out my favorite tool, my left hand to see if I wiggled some wires, it might start.

Keep in mind at this point I decided if my AC dies, I'm going to die with it, I was so upset....

I guess ten or fifteen minutes passed, and I re-assembled the AC, as I succumbed to dispair, when I turned the power switch on the AC to fan again, and this time the fan started right up!!!

I let it run on shore power for a few minutes, and then shut it down.

I then (dumbly) plugged the AS back into the Honda and switch on the AC to just fan, and it worked fine. Go figure.

Anyone have this happen. Not the symptoms of severe imbecilism, but with the above AC phnomenom?

I do know that just one 2000 will NOT run the AC compressor.

Jonathan,

You may have just kicked out the AC fan motor on thrermal overload. With the time dealy you mentioned it could have had time to cool enough to reset.

Love & kisses? How 'bout a dope slap? Well, you said "thoughts appreciated".

Seriously, it sounds to me like your actions kicked in a self-resetting breaker that did not self-reset by the time you switched over to shore power.

Are you sure that your A/C unit is not a heat pump? i.e. does the compressor run "backwards" to try & warm the place with the aid of the heat strip? If that is the case, I can very easily see your EU2000 not being up to the task. But even if it is not the case, don't sweat it unless it happens on a regular basis.

You either have a heat pump or a heat strip; never both. The AC is simply reversed to operate in the ehat pump mode.

The reset thing or something like it, was what I thought/hoped it would be but needed the consulation of others.

I'll keep an eye out.

As far as the AC, it's is the standard (11000 btu?) unit and puts out enough heat to warm up the coach a bit for those cool hung-over mornings.

Ok - so I have a eu2000 - I know it will run my Carrier March III (13,000 btu) FAN (not the AC), I was thinking about getting a heatstrip to quickly heat up the trailer (the furnace takes awhile), and was wondering if it would work with the generator. Guess not, huh?

At face value, skipping all the power equations, I find it hard to believe that a 120 vac heatstrip on a 15 or 20 amp breaker will heat your Airstream faster than a 30,000 BTU, gas fired furnace.

Am I missing something?

The furnace will heat it a lot faster than the heat strip (and without nearly as much noise).

The best a heat strip can do is take away the chill on a chilly morning. Not very fast, at that.

The furnace will definately be the choice during very cold weather. The heat strip thing in the AC as far as how I use it, is to just take the chill out of the AS, say on a 50 degree morning if I don't want to fire up the furnace. I don't use the heat in the AC as my main source of heat.

If I stand on a wooden box and have the heat strip on, I can even dry my graying, curly hair and look fabulous-ly handsome walking around the campground with the mrs.

If its a heat strip it will will run until you turn it off. The heat pump will cycle with the thermostat.
