2015 27FB Flying Cloud - AC Problem

We have a brand new Flying Cloud that on the 2nd weekend trip the AC unit over the bedroom burned out. We were outside & heard the smoke alarm go off & ran in shut everything down & found it to be the AC unit.
Is this normal that we should be having this type of problem so soon? The dealer has had it for over 2 wks now & still won't give us an eta on when it will be repaired. Is this typical?

Thanks,

Glenn & Sally

It is unusual, but not unheard of. A brand new unit suffering a failure is something called "infant mortality".
The dealer probably had to order a new air conditioner fo you from Airstream as part of the warranty process, and it can take 2+ weeks to ship.

I would jump the dealer on that one as the Dometic A/C unit is warranted by them, not Airstream. The dealer should be able to get and install a new unit in short order. There is no reason that this should take anywhere near two weeks.

The smoke is probably from the two capacitors on top. Lewster will eventually see your Thread and give his opinion.

First you will smell hot electric burn smell.
Your air conditioning unit stops. It might try to restart, but will not. They easily unplug from the wiring on top under the cover, the new replacements plug back, secure... and it is done.

But...

For such a new trailer, they should replace the whole unit, but the capacitor replacement is pretty simple and not costing very much. Once they are replaced your unit will be purring along.

I would also be an unhappy camper for the delay. Once you are back on the road, it will all be in the distant pass and we will flash our headlights when we see you coming along the highways in the Rockies.

People can jump on their dealer all they want, but either dometic or Airstream will ship the part when they ship the part.
Now, if the dealer has everything they need to perform the repair, and haven't, that is another issue.

Our first trip in our brand new Flying Cloud was from NM to Front
Royal VA. Lovely trip until we turned for home and discovered at 11 pm, the night before departure that the lock on the storage locker where all of our tow gear was stored was jammed. Night owl miracle locksmith showed up at 1 am and drilled the faulty lock out, duct taped the the locker door shut and send us on our way. Airstream didn't want to pay as we didn't contact an Airstream dealer (300 miles away) to make the repair. Our ABQ dealer ran interference for us.
Our second trip was flood time. It rained and we were ankle deep. The slide to release the black water tank wouldn't release and a friend in Memphis did a jerry rig just before sewage joined the flood waters. Our ABQ dealer kept our tt for 6 weeks but it was checked from end to end, repaired and other problems discovered and fixed at no charge. Moral - nothing is perfect but a good dealer, good friends and good people really help. Still have nightmares about that sewage at the verge of o

First, sorry to hear about your problems with a new trailer.......but they do happen. Typically, capacitors don't burn out on less they are being operated under low voltage conditions or ambient situations of extreme heat and humidity.

I have seen new roof A/C units flame, but that was a defective motor with shorted windings.

Since Dometic builds and warrants these units, Airstream will only be in the way of this type of repair, as they will be subrogating to them anyway.

A it takes is a call to Dometic tech support to get an RGA number. They usually ship a new unit (if required) same day by truck freight.

I would press your dealer on exactly what they found and what the disposition of the warranty claim is.

Don't get jerked around! You want definitive answers.
