1964 Safari Furnace Problems

We have a 1964 Safari with an original International MGF 1525 20,000 BTU furnace. The pilot light lights even before the red pilot button is pushed in, and when the thermostst call for heat, the pilot light goes out and the burner does not light. I know I can not get a replacement part for this furnace which they stopped making in 1964; however, I would like to know if the defective gas valve can be replaced with a universal gas valve. Can this be done, or should I just buy a new furnace? If a new one is in order, do you prefer Suburban of HydroFlame?

I do not have the technical expertise to answer your question, but it seems to me (if it is anything like ours...) they aren't really complicated.... depends on condition of the parts.

Anyway, (I am sure you will receive lots of qualified answers!) if you eventually decide to get rid of your old one.... don't throw it away. Some of the parts might be just what someone else is looking for! You can post a free add in our classifieds section later if you should choose. It is amazing how many new folks toss old parts, much to the sadness of those of us with older Airstreams longing for just what you had!

Good luck with your quest for answers!
