1951 Flying Cloud self contained A/C

My 1951 FC goes into the shop next week to have a Dometic self contained A/C unit with heat strips installed under the curb side bunk. The supply will go through the closet, above the original refrig and out by the door, the return will be in-between the bunks. I will post progress pics!

I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest in this install, including me. Are you having a Cool Cat installed?

1951 Flying Cloud self contianed A/C

The unit is a Dometic 14000 btu self contained unit, designed for over the road trucks and ambulances. It is 12 1/4 " high which will require raising the bunks 1 1/8 inches, which may make the bunks easier to sit on. The shop, Creative mobile Interiors has used this unit many times on sprinter type conversions and say it is very quiet.

The shop ordered it, as they buy these all the time they get a discount. It is still expensive

Looks like a great idea, let us know how it works out! I've toyed with the idea of installing a split system heat pump unit in my trailer but the old Armstrong roof unit won't die! The Armstrong and most rooftop units are annoyingly noisy when working and I've often wondered if it was possible to keep cool with less noise. Leland

I just don't want a rooftop unit spoiling the looks of the trailer. Almost all the places I use it I won't need the a/c at night, hoping I can cool the trailer down and shut it off while I sleep

Hi, your trailer looks fantastic, don't see many from '51. Can I ask what the VIN is? Mine, which is still in need of rebuild/restoration, is 7171.

Your '51 looks great! Nice work! Our '50 has the same clean lines I also hate to spoil. Considering an under-floor exhaust water heater to keep the sides clean. I will be interested to hear more about your experience with this A/C. Thanks for sharing!
