Stove top on 69 Sovereign

My stove top is pitted and rusty although seems to work well.
Is there any options or having it re-plated or can I repaint it???
Has any one restored there vintage stove top and if so what did you use or do ??

I cleaned up the stove top in my 74 Argosy with a simple strap sanding wheel on my cordless drill. I used a 120 grit wheel from ace Hdwe. This is the Approx 3 1/2" dia. wheel that is made up of a series of strips. It looks like yours is stainless steel? If so you can buff it back out to look pretty good.
The trick is to travel in one direction straight with the edge. Start at the edge where you have to push against the action of the wheel. It leaves a brushed stainless finish like a sink and not a bright polish. The nice part is the sanding strips eat away that burned on grease stuff and leave a polished surface behind.
My stove top lifts off so I could do this on a table in my shop. If your top lifts off try a spot on the back side to see if thats what you want.

Hi Todd,
I recently renovated my 69 stovetop. Here's what I did.
Not sure how to begin this task, I considered several possibilities. Finally, considered painting, so stopped by a local Sherwin Williams store. I came in asking about metal paint. After a few minutes, he convinced me to use 2 spray can products. a)Sherwin Williams-Controls Rust; as an undercoat b)Krylon Brushed Metallic (satin nickel) paint; as the topcoat.
I cleaned off the rust and pits with a metal brush, then followed that with a wipedown with Metalwax's Metal Cleaner.
This was a satisfactory solution for me and was quick and cheap ! The finish was just fine.
Also I'm a former Wisconsonite, so Hi there. How in the world do you full-time in Badgerland ?

You can take the stove top to a bumper repair shop, and have it chromed.

Hi Todd:

I took my stove and had it powder coated. It will look like brand new and can take heat up to 450 degrees. I have been asked if it is a brand new stove. go to any autobody shop and ask them if you can get it powder coated. The prices vary depending on who you go with. I took a bunch of interior metal and had them powder coat it. Everything looks like new metal. Car restorers and hot rod people do powder coat.

You can't beat the price for the job. My stove was very pitted and looked terrible before I had it done.

Any chance you can take a picture that shows the first angle (the one on the left) but with some clarity?

Maybe your camera needs you to turn on the "macro" mode, this is usually a button with a tiny flower on it.

Those are the only two I have. I pulled one off the web of other projects people have done. I worked in a vocational school where the Auto shop teacher had a business on the side building cars for the drag strip. They also rebuilt old classic cars. They guided me to shops that powder coat. There are shops all over the Atlanta area.

I took in about 8 different parts and the guy charged me $80.00 It think. I know it was not over $100.00. It was anywhere from 40 to 80. I took in things like the screen for the fart fan in the bathroom. They have every kind of color you could want. They can make it look like chrome, silver, aluminum, you name it they can do it. The neatest job I saw was a guy brought in an old sinclair gas station pump and had it powder coated. It looked like it came from the factory floor when they were done. It is really amazing.

My advice is if you take in one item or several they usually charge the same. At least the guy I went with. He was the one that suggested I bring other stuff I could powder coat the same color.

We had the same problem with our Magic Chef. We took fine automotive wet sandpaper and sanded with the grain of the metal. We used water and stainless steel polish to keep the surface wet. The job did NOT require a lot of elbow grease either. Our stove now looks brand new.
