Stainless steel corrosion

Does anyone know the best way (or any way) to remove surface corrosion from the stove-tops? I am in the process of replacing the countertops with some granite and would hate for the cook top to detract from the overall aesthetics. I am not opposed to replacing the thing, but only if it is the best option. This one is th original 4 burner. If I change it out I may reduce it to a two burner model as I don't think I need a 4 burner. Any thoughts?

The corrosion is very light and localized around the controls and a couple burners.

I would love to replace mine as well.

Someone on the forum said they sandblasted theirs and then spraypainted it with silver Rustoleum. Sound like a fairly cheap option.

Let us know how you make out.

Stove top

I am the one who sandblasted and painted the stovetop. I also removed the panel where the gas valves are for each burner and did that. I have not done the cover that goes over the burners, because is in decent shape yet. I used a "chrome" colored paint. Another possibility would be to take it to a chrome shop and have it re-chromed. Not sure what that would cost.

Books Cover

I actually was going to have mine sandblasted because I thought that it was stainless steel.

The sandblasting technician informed me that the unit was actually not solid stainless steel. It is merely an alloy type metal that is "covered" with stainless steel or a type of chrome plating.

Long story short, The only options are stripping and painting with silver paint or having it electroplated.

Of course you can clean it the best you can and lower the cover like I did. ...........

I painted the cover

Dave-O;

Are you talking about the stoves 4 burner range surface or is it the fold down protection shield? I think your refering to your burner range surface.

Most communities have someone in town who does appliance re-coating. This is now done, and has been for quite sometime, using the Powder Coating process. Very durable and heat resistant and available in any color, including the latest stainless-steel look.

These guys have had a booming business getting rid of the 50's-60's olive green and copper colored stove tops, range hoods and refrigerators in our older homes.

Thanks!

Thanks for all of the helpful info! I'll check around and see what is available. I know where a powder coating operation is, I just don't know yet if they will accept my little rinky dink cook top.
But the big thing is I know what the limitations are now.
I'll post pix when i am done.

Eastwood Powder Coating

I have some rusty rings on my stovetop around the burners. I also thought of steelwooling the area and seeing how that did. Since you mentioned Eastwood, I did a google search and came up with eastwoodco. com .... Reflective Alum Aerosol Item # 10005Z for $7.99.

What results have you had from refinishing or just cleaning?

Lightbulb SS

Saw a boating show on TV recently where the host visited this company that made SS ladders for the boating market that, sparked an "idea"..On the show, the company's owner mention how they gave SS such a shine by flowing current thru the ladder to bring out the SS to the surface..It almost looked like a 'proof stamped coin'. My thought was..could this process work with the SS stove top?

Flowing current?

Could I get the tongue of the trailer hooked up and run the current to the back bumper to shine it?

Thumbs up stove top

We found that stove top cover a real weird situation. The bottom
was nice brushed stainless-lookin' steel. The top was rusted and corroded?!? We opted to sand down the top and rustoleum primer it. We achieved a top shine with MAB Aluminum enamel, and this looks really good.

ACTION
You be sure to let us know how it worked..I reckon you'll need to dip your tail (no pun intended) in a liquid solution in order to shine your bumper...lmao HECK, WHILE YOU'RE AT IT, PUT YOUR WHEELS IN TOO...Might as well do it all at once..lmao

That is a judgemental call..Personally, I'd rather use '303 UV Inhibator'.

I'll take that under advisement.

I am also looking at shining my stovetop. I tried to get replacement parts from inland...and will try another today. Why don't they make these???? (and i don't want to hear because they are outdated!!) But, I guess I am resigned to shining (as best I can) the parts i have. I did find that the copper polish from the grocery store, a green scrunge and a lot of elbow grease does a fairly good job. I also scraped some of the corrosion with a scraper which cut down on some of my polishing time. Still working and still looking.

Of course. But you need to pass the current through a rotary motion generator (RMG) to do any good. You should attach a sheepskin bonnet to the RMG.

Just couldn't Resist

M,

So if I jack up my Overlander and wrap my jumper cables around the tires. Then have the neighborhood kid spin the tires, is that a RMG? If not, will I need 4 kids? Then would I need to alter my wheel bearing packing schedule? Speaking of packing, what is the cycle life of a 10 yo kid?

I had mine sandblasted and powdercoated. It came out quite nice. There are dozens of powdercoat companies in just about every city. You can even buy a powdercoat kit from Harbor Freight for less than $100. You can get sample powder from many of the big companies. They send out small amounts, which is perfect for AS projects. Then all you need is an oven to bake them in.
