Magic Chef won't stay lit !!!!

Ok folks, I have, I'm guessing the Original Magic Chef oven in my 1968 ambassador. I can get the pilot light to light only If I turn the temp Knob on as well.

I'm guessing it is suppose to light by just turning the oven on. Then when the oven comes up to temp and turns off the burners the pilot light goes out too.

What could the problem be??? It's got to be one of the valves.

Jason, more likely it is the thermocouple. When you light the pilot and push down the button for 30 seconds, that is supposed to be enough time to heat up the thermocouple. When hot, it sends a current to the main gas valve telling it to stay open and the pilot light to stay lit. There are safety reasons not to light the burners first because if it is the thermostat, they the burners may stay on forever, or until the propane runs out or the trailer melts. If it doesn't keep the pilot light on, probably it has died. They are cheap. Take the old one to a hardware store (Ace in Delta has lots of stuff) and they should be able to match it

Newer ovens have circuit boards, thermistors, and other newfangled things, but yours is so old it is probably that simple.

The thermocouple is fine.

The on switch is the the button. Out of the on switch are two lines. One goes to the pilot light one goes to the temp switch. When you turn it on you are then suppose to light the pilot light. I am getting nothing.

If i turn the burning switch on I then get gas to the pilot light and the burners.

Ok, the line from the on switch that is the pilot line gas. Goes into the temp switch and then down to the pilot light. The only other thing going into the temp switch is the temp sensor which works because it shuts of the burners. I'm not getting how the pilot light works on this thing.

I think I got this thing figured out.

The pilot light has a secondary one that lights from the thermostat switch to light the burner. this was the one I was lighting when turning on the thermostat switch. I have taken apart the pilot light one and cleaned it out and blown it out. I will put it back together and hope it all works now..

problem sovled, What I thought was the pilot light was the igniter for the burners the pilot light next to it was clogged. After some carb clearer and some air it works great. The oven works great for being 43 years old. works like a charm...
