Magic Chef Thermostat...again

I know we've been down this long road before, many times..but I still want my '64 Magic Chef oven to work.

Has anyone found a suitable substitute, working spare or rebuilder (for under $120) for a Harper Wyman 5345 thermostat from a Magic Chef model 520 stove/oven?

I know they are listed as No Longer Available...not buying that...willing to buy it if you have it, there has to be one laying on shelf somewhere in mom and pop appliance world.

Liability is the issue.

If the original manufacturer says NLA, then that's your answer.

You can do anything with your oven, that you wish.

But, if "anyone" says you can use a whatever for a substitute, and you in fact do that, and for what ever reason it might fail and cause any kind of harm or trouble, then who ever made that recomendation to you, instantly becomes liable.

Attorneys love cases like that, because they win, "hands down" and "thumbs up".

I don't think you will find a rebuilder or a replacement for under $120. That seems to be the minimum price point. I found a nice replacement for my Robershaw Model BJ from stoveparts.net.

If you find a cheaper used one, it will just as likely need a rebuild as the one you have.

Spend the bucks and get it rebuilt. It's worth it.

I'm not a lawyer, so this is not legal advice.

I went through all of this a few years ago with our '65 Caravel.

I decided not to go for the expensive rebuilt, and went for a new stove and oven. It fit the same hole, same screw holes, same gas connection, and is much, much easier to take the burner area apart and clean.

Replacing was a ten minute job.

Never been sorry.

I looked long and hard for a replacement thermostat (1969 Magic Chef) I finally found one for $120 but don't remember where. I doubt you will beat that price.

Decided against it since it was not really an exact replacement and no returns.

Thanks all,
Now I get it. Thanks Andy, I actually forgot the world is now law suit happy.

There has to be a Robert Shaw or other Harper Wyman that would "fit and work" but Andy's right (duh) no business will tell me that for fear.

I tried the old stove site recommended, in fact they tested mine...very nice, but wanted $265 to rebuild it.

If I can find one anywhere near $150 or so I'll buy it, otherwise the $265 goes towards new stove.

Anyone parting out an oven?

What goes wrong with these oven thermostats? The thermocouple or internal guts?

Stove trouble too

I too had a thermo. bad on my Majic Chief and thought it was a stuck valve that WD 40 would fix. As parts fell out I decided to quit. Does anyone know of a good brand and source for a new oven?

GAT, sorry can't help with source of new oven, let me know if you find one that fits good.

Please don't trash your old Magic Chef thermostat.
I'm starting a collection! Really!

Determined to find enough old ones to put together a working (safe) rebuild of my own.

I'm determined to figure out what goes wrong with these critters by reverse engineering if neccessary.

I sent my thermostat to these folks to be rebuilt:
Associated Appliance
2318 NW 12
Oklahoma City, OK 73107

They told me that it would cost under $150 to rebuild. After checking it they returned and informed me that it was fine. I just needed to turn my pilot light up. They charged $25 for checking.

Now, I am not suggesting that this would fix your problem, but I want to recommend this company because they could have charged me +/-$135 and I would never have known the difference. They are very honest.

BTW........ my original Tappan stove (1963) looks just like the Magic Chefs. It has a Robert Shaw thermostat.

Thanks.
Did you happen to note the 4 digit number on the bottom of your Robert Shaw thermostat?

A lot of Harper-Wyman and Robert Shaw parts interchange on 1940-70s home appliances, I would expect same for 1960's Magic Chef, Tappen etc trailer sized stoves.

I called the place you recommended last week. Thanks for the line. The woman I spoke with said "We don't rebuild parts". Perhaps I'll call again and get a different answer. Sounds like the service you got is what I want.

really, send me old trailer thermostats, we'll get to the bottom of this!

Thanks
