Magic Chef Stove

The Magic Chef stove in the 1965 Safari we're restoring is in excellent working order and we would like to keep it. The problem is water leaked down through the range hood and the top, cover & burner bibs are pitted and rusted. Any ideas on how to salvage this? I got an estimate to have them "rechromed" and it was $1600!!!

Yeah right.... I would try a wire brush for a drill to clean it up with. Then find some chrome color paint for a BBQ or engine and spy away. it should hold up.

You could use this - let it dry and heat it in an oven to 400 degrees to set the finish.

Or, consider having the parts powder coated.

Are the items completely rusted through in spots? Why not shop around for a plating job? Somebody should be able to do them much cheaper than that.

I had the same issue. Took mine to a powder coating enterprise. They said they could clean it up and powder coat it to about the same finish for about $100.00. I am waiting for a call to come pick it up. I also took my rusted stabilizer jacks for the same treatment based on what someone else on the forum did.

Hope it works, will let you know when I see it.

If someone quoted you $1600 then they didn't want to do the work or you happened to call a place that specializes in jewelry-quality restoration.

Find another plating shop. There are lots of them. Also, some of them offer different grades of service, and if you make it clear how what you're trying to accomplish in terms of durability and polish you may get a better price.

We took our burners and the thing under the burners to get power-coated. We waiting until the owner had other work to do and he did ours at the same time. Charged $40.00. We wished we would have done the cover for the stove-top at the same time. It didn't look bad until we had the other stuff done.

Oven

We restored and updated a 65 Safari and had the same problem with the Magic Chef. We took ours out completely and put in a new counter top, sink and burner top. In the space the oven occupied we added more shelves and made two doors to match the rest of the cabinets. We don't like using an oven in a trailer (too much heat). Good luck which ever way you go.....Tim

Magic Chef Stove

Thanks everyone. I have seen some pictures where someone had powder coating put on theirs and it looked great. Think we're going to try that.

Stove question

Our unit has a gas top stove but no oven below, instead we have drawers. On the opposite side of the galley, we have a microwave/convection oven built in which my wife does not like. I am planning to put in a gas oven beneath the gas top and take the micowave/convection oven out. I wondered if there were suggestions on the type of oven to buy for best performance and quality.
