How To: Replace Convection-Microwave w/ Gas Range
I have just completed the replacement of my Convection-Microwave and gas Cooktop with a gas Range. We prefer to use a regular oven to the convection-microwave oven, so after the recent purchase of our '05 30' Classic, we took on the project to perform this replacement.
Here are the before and after shots. It actually came out quite well. In the subsequent posts, I will show the process.

Removal of the Gas Cooktop
The first step was to remove the drawers, the Convection-Microwave Oven, and the gas Cooktop...

Cabinet Work for the Drawers
The opening where the Convection-Microwave oven was is close to correct, but not quite. It is not quite tall enough, and it is a bit wider than needed. So, I had to cut the opening a bit bigger by cutting out the wood at the bottom of the opening. This made the height just about right. Then I installed new drawer divider cabinetry (after having to order hickory wood on-line) and shimmed the sides a quarter inch narrower on each side. I finished the new woodwork. Then I installed the drawer slides.

The Finished Project...
Another picture of the finished project.
This actually took me a couple of months to complete with ordering the Range, getting the hickory wood, and measuring many times to see if it would actually work.
I would like to take the time to thank the Air Forums contributors for all the help I have received in recent months. Maybe this will help some others.

Great job.. looks like a nice installation. We removed out cooktop and installed the oven too as we like having that vs. the use of that convection oven. The next step for us is to remove the convection oven which is mounted opposite the regular oven and just install a regular microwave. The display panel is out again after having it repaired and it takes a rocket scientist to figure it out anyways..

I want to do the same thing to our 25' Flying Cloud. Wondering why you flipped the drawers with the oven space?

Very nice work. We have considered doing just the opposite. You made the changes look easy.

I thought about purchasing just an in-wall oven to replace the convection-microwave. I did a bit of research, but couldn't find one that didn't require 120VAC for the control circuitry.
So, I decided to replace the cooktop with the range/oven combination. This was a relatively easy swap since the space is used for that from the factory when a gas oven is installed. Then I "just" had to move the drawers over (easier said than done).

Easy, aye! It wasn't too hard, just had to be careful. I made a couple of mistakes that, if I had to do it over again, I would do differently.

A couple of things...
1) Make sure you cut the boards the correct size that go between the drawers. I cut mine about an 8th of an inch too big (tall), so the drawers would not fit with the slides in. I had to notch the slides into the rail below. It wasn't too big a problem, but was anoying.
2) I had to add plywood to the back of the cabinet for the back of the drawer slides to attach to. I didn't make the one on the right tall enough for all screws. So, the top drawer slide on the right has only one screw attaching it to the back. I will probably add to the plywood to get the three screws in.
Other than that, it went quite well. As with all projects, you have to go with the flow and make adjustments along the way.
Regards,
David

Here's a picture of the slide with only one screw...
Note the round hole in the board I installed. This is for just in case I want to get to the oven outlet in the future.
