Harper-Wyman Oven Thermostat (Magic Chef Range)

Hello All,

After repairing the oven pilot supply line on the Magic Chef range in our 1966 Tradewind the Harper-Wyman thermostat has stopped controlling the oven temperature.

I had found that the 1/8" aluminum supply line for the oven pilot had worn a tiny hole through due to vibration where it passes through the back of the range into the oven compartment. I only discovered this after pulling the range out of the cabinet. The pilot still functioned normally. After replacing the line and reinstalling the range it tested out fine.

At our first use of the oven however we discovered that the thermostat had stopped working. I am assuming that the capillary tube that runs into the oven was somehow damaged as I was installing the new line.

I have been searching for a replacement thermostat with no luck so far. I found a company that will repair ours for $225, but that seems a bit steep.

Any other thoughts?

If you can, post a picture of the range and the thermostat that would be most helpful. Also what is the model number of your range ? There should be a tag inside the burner area.

thermostat

You may see if this will work for your oven, your model is not listed but you may give them a call.

Thanks for the lead James, but they said that the thermostat that they offer will not work on our range.

What is it doing, er- Not doing?

How is it failing?
Is it not turning the burner on when it gets to cold, or is it not turning it off when it gets to hot?

Symptoms of the Faulty Oven Thermostat

The thermostat does not turn off the gas. It just keeps getting hotter and hotter until you turn off the control.

thats pretty close to the same unit I'm dealing with, Also with a Harper-Wyman, so I'll throw my 2 bits out there.

The pilot assembly has its own capilary tube that opens the main burner valve when its heated by a jet thats turned on by the main thermostat.
So if the pilot assembly is out of alighnment, the cap tube on the pilot assembly could be contacting the flame from the main burner, which would keep the main burner valve open regardless of what the controll is set to.
See my earlier thread with pics of where the pilot is supposed to be.
