Gas smell in oven

The Majic Chef oven in my 76 Soveriegn has a very strong gas smell even with the pilot lit. It's definately coming from the oven, not the top burners or top gas connection. I left the pilot lit for several days and it got unbearable (and scary). But it didn't act funny, blow itself up or anything :-) Anyone got an idea? We plan to move in full time soon and gotta get rid of that smell.

Start checking all your connections with soapy water. You may be able to rent an LP detector. Hand held ones are not too expensive, but I don't use one often enough to purchase.

Finally got everything else under control and concentrated on the gas smell. I found that the automatic oven shutoff valve was leaking under the back plate. The o ring seal was mispositioned and it must have been leaking since 1976! In the process I found a handy way to test with soapy water. I filled one of my wifes spray bottles and was able to spray upward from beneath fittings and generally get the solution on stuff that would have been hard to get at otherwise.
