Why shut off the gas line?

The PO of my airstream must have shut off the gas line to the referigerator. Was boondocking (first time) this past weekend, and it wouldnt successfully switch to gas mode (not igniting). On deep investigation, i found the small screw valve that feeds gas just before the ignitor was off, so i turned it back on and the unit worked great.

Just curious to understand why someone might want to close this - if you dont want the unit to run, can't you just turn it off from inside?

Some people are nervous about gas. Personaly when ever I am not using the trailer I turn my gas off at the bottle.

Some folks are idiots. All gas systems leak a little so if you don't want to loose propane when not using the system, then turn it off at the bottle.

I was going to say it might have something to do with tunnel or ferry regulations but I think he was just an idiot.

I bet it was the ferry

I recall that he took it to the islands up here in the NW.

Thanks.

All of the Washington and BC Ferries demand that the propane tanks be turned off and tagged at the tank valves, so that doesn't explain it..

It might be possible that the trailer had a Norcold or Dometic Refigerator covered by the "Spontaneous Combustion" recall notice, and they decided to reduce the odds of a fire without bothering to comply with the recall.. Also possible they just didn't trust Propane cooling, and were going to use electrical or nothing.. Or.. Maybe they were idiots, as noted above...

I can't think of a rational reason to turn the gas off by the means you described...the frig will default to electricity when hooked to shore power, but you can manually set to gas if you want.

The only irrational reason I can think of is paranoia about propane when the frig is running in electric mode. But that doesn't even really make any sense because if you've got the propane tanks turned on there will still be gas to the frig, even if that igniter valve is off ... You'll want to turn them off while in storage, but don't forget to open them when you go campin'

Cool propane shut-offs

I drove a propane powered school bus for 8 yrs. there should be no leaks in your system. tanks and valves may Vent due to temp or pressure; this is normal. properly working valves shut off the gas or allow it to burn like a blowtorch in case of a fire. bad valves or leaks will cause an explosion that will take out a city block. how old are your shut-offs? better be paranoid and alive than casual and dead! before I go on the road, I burn off the gas in the lines, then shut them all off! NOT to say that propane isn't safe; a few yrs ago, a bus garage burned down...all the gasoline buses exploded, the propane buses burned downed to the bare frame, but the propane tanks did NOT explode! joe q
