Sport 22FB refrig, how to store 1 gal milk?

I am looking to buy new or used Airstream.

Sport 22FB looks very desirable. However, I noticed the refrig doesn't have the cut out on the bottom shelf for a gallon of milk, like the Flying Cloud 19 and 20 refrig's. My current trailer's refrig, 2004 Casita 17, has cut out for milk, so that's what I am used to.

What do others with Sport 22's do to keep milk in refrig? Thanks

I haven't tried it but you could either take the bottom shelf out, lay the gallon on its side, or buy half gallons.

It's a small fridge for sure. The 22FB is designed to be light so there are compromises. I think it makes up for it by far in being super easy to tow due to the weight and the smaller frontal area (it's narrower and lower than the other Airstreams). It's roomy where it counts with lots of counter space, a big bed, and a big bathroom.

We have a cooler that we use for fridge overflow. Put the tall stuff in there and throw a half bag of ice in there. The other half bag of ice? Goes in the freezer or the drink cooler.

Can you decant into smaller containers?

Sometimes it's handy to find containers that fit a given space perfectly (such as your fridge dimensions) and then to transfer from store containers into personal containers.

In my case, we just bought half gallon sized containers. Got a buddy to think of design solution but decided not to give up the shelf space for a gallon of milk. We continue to stop at Walmart and just get quarts on the road - and buy goodwill with those letting us park on their lots. Remember, clean up after yourselves!

We have the smaller fridge in our 19' removed the lower shelf with the cutout and use a small Sterolite drawer set-up for eegs, cold cuts, cheese, etc...anything that fits... and sit taller items next to it .. and the top can be used as well. We put juices and milk in 1/2 gallon or quart plastic containers. It may not look like this yields more fridge space, but it does...it's worked quite well for us. The drawers can be places int he middle with space on either side as well, depending on what you are taking. We also use SnapWare containers because they lock and the fit the fridge shelves perfectly.

I don't know where ya'll are from, but in CA and TX, whether it's a gallon or a half quart or just a quart, they are all the same height. I wouldn't lay a gallon on its side, I've done that before and it leaks like crazy.

You know the juices, Simply Orange, Simply Apple, and so on? That plastic carafe does not leak when laying on its side. I suggest buying a few of those juices and washing the carafes out. You will need to soak them in a solution of white vinegar and water, or maybe baking soda and water, or maybe activated charcoal and water. These liquids remove smells. I have a couple of these carafes and they work great!

Use powdered milk, mix it with cold water from purchased water bottles cooled in the 'fridge. It is much better than it used to be.

Rum works well with corn flakes and does not need to be refrigerated.

When my kids were little I use to buy a single gallon of milk and pour half of it into a sterilized milk jug then I'd make a full gallon of powdered milk, and poured 1/2 into each bottle. Then I'd put a tsp of vanilla into each gallon jug, cap it, and shake vigorously. I always did this at night when the kids were asleep, by morning it was icy cold and delicious.

So powdered milk has been improved, eh? What brands and what have they done.

My 22' Sport has a cut-out for milk. Are you sure you've not swapped the upper and lower shelves?
You can also cut the lower shelf out to accommodate a milk carton. It's a simple matter.

I keep and carry powdered milk for cooking purposes, have for decades.

I have found that carrying a quart of milk or cream on the frig door in very hot weather contributes to it spoiling quickly...it just doesn't stay cold enough there to last the week or 10 days I need to use it up.

In hot weather, I lay these on a shelf inside, and use the door for water, iced tea, and other items more amenable to varying temperatures.

It's also probably worth noting that anything with any weight (such as a half-gallon of milk) in the door places quite a burden on the door hinges, especially while bumping down the road.
We keep only light items in the door.

Yes, putting heaving items in the door is bad idea IMO. When we 1st got the Casita, we loaded up the refrig door with heavy items and soon had broken door trays.
