Replacing old refrigerator

Our old RV fridge in our 1972 22' Argosy is still working, but we were wondering about replacing it. The cost of a new electric only is still outrageous at about $500 or more. Has anyone or does anyone know if it can be replaced with a 'bar' type refrigerator? Like the small ones you can buy with a very small freezer? I know the only change is the height of even some of these small ones, which are about 33" in height and the old one is apparently 31", although the opening is bigger.
Has anyone done this conversion? We just need an electric one..
Thoughts, ideas please

Adding a new fridge!

We went from the old fridge to the "new" fridge.....we only needed electric also and I know that this one looks really big but it was on clearance and was actually $25 cheaper than the dorm fridge....but it works great for what we need.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Seriously. It could be good for another 10 to 20 years. A home refrigerator will vibrate itself to death in a moving RV... and it doesn't run on propane when you have no hookups.

If a home refer was the "hot setup", RVs would come with them.

It's your rig. Do what you wish.

However, unless you are going to keep your Argosy forever, you may want to re-think your choice. Finding someone, like yourself, who will be happy with a 110v only refer might be difficult.

Palomino Parts (division of Palomino RV) in Elkhart has The Best prices on Dometic fridge's you will find. I just bought a new DM2852 8 cubic foot from them for $850. Camping World wants $1477 for the same fridge. You can find the number on these forums. Call up Jevin and he'll hook you up. Get you a new Carrier 15,000 btu a/c while you're at it. I got both and just put them in my 34 footer. Good joojoo!

Dometic's website has a cross reference with sizes.

Have you considered having your existing shelves powder coated? Check your Yellow Pages or those of the nearest metro area and you should find a number of shops specializing in powder coating -- most shops offer the complete sevice including media blasting to the final finish. It may be better to save this job for the off-season as Spring/Summer is often the busiest season for many of these shops.

I agree with several others... if it is working fine. Be happy. Go camping!

Why are you wanting to replace it anyway? If you want the door a different color, paint it... if the inside needs work, you can do that too! If you want more square footage in your refrigerator... add a second small bar type like you were thinking about, you can pick those up for a $150 or so. Try them both out. There are options rather than buying a brand new one, search out places that recondition used RV refrigerators check the price difference so you can keep both electric and propane. I would really go with a dual system... when the power goes out, you can have cold beer!
