I have a 79 Tradewind with original fridge. I am looking for ideas to "update" the front. Right now it appears to have the oh so awsome wood look contact paper!
I have thought about black panels maybe like what you would get with a new dishwasher?? The reverasable panels....anyone update their fridge?
Wood veneer?? More contact paper stuff??? paint??
YOur ideas and pics would be great!!
Changed out the plastic skin from my '78 dometic refrigerator. Went to 1/4" stained plywood (they could be painted). I removed the plastic strip from the top of the refer door, and bottom of the freezer door. Pulled the plastic stuff out, which I used as a templates for the plywood.

I had two pieces of plastic laminate (Formica) cut to fit. These match our new countertops in the kitchen and bath. We just took the aluminum edging off the doors these slid into place with about 1/32" to spare.
We spray-painted the panel from the fridge to a colour that matched our colour scheme. No pictures though because then we decided to go with a new fridge.
We have a 1979 as well and went the same direction as Birdwell. 1/8" panelling fits perfectly back in the slot although tight. We went with yellow pine to match the interior. Our plastic strips that hold the panels in had orange stickers that the sticky could not be removed so we used 1/8" paneling strips to cover them up. You may have the same issue since it is 1979 as well:
