Bob I am not an expert on vintage Airstreams, but to the best of.my knowledge Airstream has always used ammonia based refrigeration - and those do not have compressors, nor do they make noise while operating except for a circulating fan. They run on shore power (AC) or a propane burner.
In an Airstream as old as yours, it is quite possible that the original icebox or refrigerator has been replaced with an apartment/dorm style refrigerator; quite commonly an inexpensive fix for stationary RVs that always have AC power.
If you can't find an electric/propane switch and if looking in the outside access panel doesn't reveal a propane line, you probably have a cheap dorm unit that is not worth repairing.
I am going to shut up and let the vintage gurus really help you. Will suggest going to the airstream.com website to see if they have .pdf for units as old as yours. Do try the SEARCH function for your year and model too. Lots of full monte threads... you are going where mo' men have gone before!
Good hunting, Paula
