Refrigerator on gas

We have experienced an interesting issue regarding our Dometic refrigerator operating on gas.

When operating, the flame does not want to stay lit. The unit has been retrofitted for a recent recall. It now has a large plate that mounts in front of the burner assembly. It still has the original small baffle (?) mounted inside the large plate. Through process of elimination, by removing the small plate the flame starts immediately and burns just fine. The burner assembly was cleaned, etc. Removing the small plate does not seem to create any issue with heat, etc.

Has anyone experienced the same issue?

Thanks, Jack

Personally, I wouldn't mess with it. Sounds like something got messed up on the recall and needs to be addressed. If it was operating properly before the alterations, then it's the responsibility of who ever did the work to get it right. You shouldn't have to deal with this since it sounds like you can easily reproduce the failure. I don't screw around with anything that is malfunctioning on gas. The consequences are pretty extreme. We had a trailer blow up while camping about 5 sites from us. Not something you want to ever experience.

Is this the "fire" recall?
I know it was expanded to 2006, didn't realize it went as far as 2011.
It is possible that it was a new stock unit from 06 installed 5 years later in 2011.

We had ours done in 2005, no problems at all with the flame going out.

Call Dometic...they have been helpful for us in the past, or Lewster...where are you??

Are you saying that the flame GOES OUT after a period of time or just won't light at all if booth baffles are in place?

The flame lights but evidently won't stay lit. The ignitor will click several times to try to sustain the flame on its own. After several clicks of the ignitor, the system then goes to "check". This is what happens with both covers in place. When to smaller cover located inside the larger plate is removed, the system lights right away and stays lit. I'm waiting to hear back from Dometic.

My first thought would relate to the thermocouple. Could be bad. Or It may relate to the air flow around it with both shields in place. If the air flow is such that the flame is moved off the couple to the point it thinks the flame has gone out it would shut the gas off. The control board seeing a call for cold would attempt to relight the the flame and if it could not in the time out period would shutdown all together.

I would replace the thermocouple
