Refrigerator inside light.

The inside light for our refrig does not turn on when opening the door. I have checked the bulb and the filiment is not broken. The connections also look ok, both at the bulb and at the switch that turns it on and off. Is it possible that the switch has gone bad and is there a way to check the switch. The refrigerator itself is working fine.

Thanks
John

There is a fuse on the control board.... is your fridge working for certain?
I believe there is a 5 and a 3 amp glass cartridge type fuse.
Maybe a little contact cleaner and massage of the switch.

If the door is open you should have voltage on both sides of the switch. With a volt meter test for voltage on both side of the switch.

If you only have voltage on one side the switch is either dirty or broken. If you don't have voltage at all look at the fuses on the frig. control board.

I have replaced the switch twice. Not a big deal to do. Right now I am carrying 2 spare switches. The last switch I bench tested with a 9v battery and meter and found it worked intermittently. The plastic cover can be pried off and the rest is easy.

Switch failures on the newer Dometic fridges are, unfortunately, common.

That explains it! Just had that problem this week. I tapped the light and it won't back on. Then off. Then on intermittently. Since the fridge kept showing me the temp (and everything was cold) I'm assuming it's the switch issue you're talking about and not something worse. I might live without the light for a while, though I was thinking about connecting one of those refrigerator fans to the light...will have to think about this.

Steve and Sue
I had a heck of time finding the switch as the ones pictured on ebay , Amazon were not the same. Called Dometic twice. First time they could not fine the MFG # so I reread it (I did have it right) and called back. They found it and sent me the parts list.
The Model # of my refrig is RM3762LBX and the MFG # is 958530313. The switch part number is 233-3851000012. I ultimately ordered a couple from AnyRV parts.

If you dcide to get one this may save you some time.

Same problem on mine. Please someone post a picture of where the switch is and how to replace it.

Thanks in advance.

I will take a picture tomorrow and post. In the meantime if you open the refrig door the switch is on your left side about halfway down the left edge when looking into the refrig.

I went to install the new switch and the interior light still does not work. I checked the only fuse I saw on the control board and it is fine. If there is a second fuse on that board I do not see it. I did check the fuse in the panel box inside the trailer and it was also fine. Also the light does not look broken as the filament is one piece and attached.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I now have egg on my face. It was as they say in the movies "it was the bulb that did it". I assumed the bulb was good since even using a magnifying glass the filament did not look broken. So after checking all of the fuses and replacing the plug the interior light still would not go on. Claire said what about the bulb. Of course I said it was still good as I checked the filament and it was not broken. She said in her infinite wisdom just because the bulb looks good it does not mean it has not gone bad. So today, swallowing my pride, I went and bought a new bulb. I put it in and low and behold it worked.

So what did I learn. Two things first always check the basics and more importantly one should know better then not to listen to one's wife after being married for more then 45 years.

I could say the same about why the light didnt go on. As it was very obvious after I replaced the bad bulb.So I myself over the head.

And the Ford said, Let there be light!

... and there was light, and the Ford said, it is good.
The contacts for the bulb were dirty. All good now. Too Simple!

(Hijack: if you don't know my last name is Ford. I learned the technical difference between cursing and blasphemy at a very early age. Herein followeth the Tale of the Iron Maiden)

In the 50's bullying a helpless girl was considered to be bad form. For a helpless girl to cold cock a big bully was somehow worse. Such social nuances generally evaded me, so...

One Sunday after church I found myself being chastised in front of the whole Sunday School by the minister and my mother. I had knocked a boy to the floor with a single punch that left him reeling. He was smarmy little suck-up who would secretly torment girls and he'd thrown a lighted match in my hair, but of course no one else knew that. I "tattled" and showed the minister the burn mark, then smacked that smug little creep again - right in front of both mom and the minister - defiantly declaring, "Vengance is mine sayeth the Ford."

The minister nearly had a stroke.

My mother who generally suffered from chronic "stickus-uppus-buttus" ... first started making small strangled sounds which resolved themselves into badly covered snickers, and then finally uncontrollable laughter and knee slapping. After regaining a modicum of composure she just hustled the whole family out of the back door.

It was two days before she could calm down enough to enlighten me as to the nature of my transgression, but her face kept working in odd ways.

No one EVER spoke of the incident again. The kid & I both returned to Sunday school and generally stayed far apart. ((I never said, "De Nile is not a river in Egypt" in public, because I knew the odds were 50-50 that my mother might crack up - or crack down... with a buggy whip if she could find one))
