I now have egg on my face. It was as they say in the movies "it was the bulb that did it". I assumed the bulb was good since even using a magnifying glass the filament did not look broken. So after checking all of the fuses and replacing the plug the interior light still would not go on. Claire said what about the bulb. Of course I said it was still good as I checked the filament and it was not broken. She said in her infinite wisdom just because the bulb looks good it does not mean it has not gone bad. So today, swallowing my pride, I went and bought a new bulb. I put it in and low and behold it worked.

So what did I learn. Two things first always check the basics and more importantly one should know better then not to listen to one's wife after being married for more then 45 years.

I could say the same about why the light didnt go on. As it was very obvious after I replaced the bad bulb.So I myself over the head.

And the Ford said, Let there be light!

... and there was light, and the Ford said, it is good.
The contacts for the bulb were dirty. All good now. Too Simple!

(Hijack: if you don't know my last name is Ford. I learned the technical difference between cursing and blasphemy at a very early age. Herein followeth the Tale of the Iron Maiden)

In the 50's bullying a helpless girl was considered to be bad form. For a helpless girl to cold cock a big bully was somehow worse. Such social nuances generally evaded me, so...

One Sunday after church I found myself being chastised in front of the whole Sunday School by the minister and my mother. I had knocked a boy to the floor with a single punch that left him reeling. He was smarmy little suck-up who would secretly torment girls and he'd thrown a lighted match in my hair, but of course no one else knew that. I "tattled" and showed the minister the burn mark, then smacked that smug little creep again - right in front of both mom and the minister - defiantly declaring, "Vengance is mine sayeth the Ford."

The minister nearly had a stroke.

My mother who generally suffered from chronic "stickus-uppus-buttus" ... first started making small strangled sounds which resolved themselves into badly covered snickers, and then finally uncontrollable laughter and knee slapping. After regaining a modicum of composure she just hustled the whole family out of the back door.

It was two days before she could calm down enough to enlighten me as to the nature of my transgression, but her face kept working in odd ways.

No one EVER spoke of the incident again. The kid & I both returned to Sunday school and generally stayed far apart. ((I never said, "De Nile is not a river in Egypt" in public, because I knew the odds were 50-50 that my mother might crack up - or crack down... with a buggy whip if she could find one))

How dare you tell such an outrageous story about our sainted mother?! OMG, I'd forgotten this particular one. I was sure you were going to tell the one about the bully who thought he could get away with pushing ME around. The wrath of Ford fell on him too...I love my sister, she's awesome!

Karen you were in the nursery - a separate room - and perhaps less than 2 years old. I remember dad, Bill and I hopelessly trying to keep up with mother as she "power walked" home that day. Dad was carrying you and trying to keep us moving at double time too.

It was the early 60's when you were about 7 and K.P. bullied you. Mom was never "cool" but she was out in the world working. The sarcasm with which she uttered the classic "Yes, lets DO call the police and tell them how my twelve year old daughter beat up your fourteen year old son!" will live on in legend.

It took me too long to learn other negotiating skills. I really believe that you should teach children how to talk their way out, joke their way out, reason and compromise and respect... and run away if you can. K.P. never came looking for another shot at me, but what if he had? Or worse yet, what if he'd come after you? (Well I think he sensed that I might just nail his ............ to a tree and then set the tree on fire... but still looking back it was a risky thing to smack him around in front of his friends.)
