Refer Blues

My 71 I'm fixing up has sat for many years. I had a mobile RV repair guy come over and recommend replacing all the appliances with new. The old stove oven will stay. I agree with his thinking about the furnace, AC and hot water heater.

However, the original refridgerator works fine on 110 and is in really nice shape. The pilot lights but does not stay on. The RV repair guy says you can't do any work on the fridge without pulling it. To me it looks like he is right. Also says you can't get parts for it. So he says replacing it with a new one is the only way to go.

Is he jumping the gun, Are there other things that should be checked or cleaned before putting in new?

I may pull it this weekend. Anything I should try to do? cleaning orifices, checking thermocouples etc.?

Or am I just asking for trouble, even if I can get it to run on gas, by spending hours removing, tinkering and reinstalling a 36 year old unit.

I wouldn't give up yet on the refridgerator. There is a vendor on here that refabs the old coils. I would give him a call and see if he knows of some parts resources. If not then your looking at $700 to $1200 for the appliance only and that installing it yourself.

If it works on 110 , and there is no amonia smell , the coils are fine . More than likely a good cleaning of the gas jet , pilot and chimney is all that is needed . If there is no access to the back you will have to pull it out , a bit of a pain but not that hard. If you need parts check the link previously posted , or put it in the want ads here . Good luck.

PS I would also find a more knowledgable dealer.

Thanks,
Who is the vendor and how do I contact him?

Once you pull your refer out... I would try "burping" it. Turn it upside down and let it sit for 24 hours. [After you have cleaned and check all the tubing, etc.] There are threads on this... sounds goofy, but it worked for us!

Don't pull the fridge, you should be able to make the repairs through the access door in the side of the trailer. If it cools well on 110 volts, you don't need to burp the fridge, more likely either the gas jet is clogged with trash, or the thermocouple has been movedd out of the path of the flame, and it turns off the pilot.
a couple of sheet metal screws hold the cover for the pilot in place, remove them, then you can access the pilot. You can remove the pilot with a wrench, just make sure you tunr the LP off first. Clean the screen on the pilot, and reinstall it. Check to make sure the little sensor for the thermocouple is where the pilot will heat it. Put the cover back on, and light the pilot. Let us know how it works.
