No cooling, ammonia smell in freezer

After two years of no traveling while caring for my mother, we are ready to head to Minnesota Saturday. BUT, in provisioning mode, when I checked the refrig this evening after turning in on ac yesterday, I found we had no cooling, and the freezer reeks of ammonia. So...we need help and/or advice. With a possible ammonia leak, is the refrig cooked? Is repair possible? Recommendations, fast, appreciated! Desperate to finally get on the road again...~G

You'll need a cooling unit or fridge.

fast...

Forget the replacement cooling unit....your better off to just get a new fridge. No way about it either. Sorry...its expensive.

PS...your close enough to Colaws....maybe there is a deal there.

fridge=toast.

cooling unit almost = price of new fridge.

IF not 4 the smell, beating on it might get it cooling again.

which trailer has this issue?

the quick fix/cheap fix might be to MOVE the arg' fridge to the classic.

this could work for a least 1 trip.

swapping the other way would be a bigger problem.

many LOCAL rv supply/repair shops have fridges IN STOCK...

so perhaps one nearby has a new fridge and can do the install.

IF you are traveling this direction on the way north...

there are shops in kc and st louie that have fridges.

cheers

Thanks, that was fast Both of you give us ideas to consider in the morning. Colaws is a possibility. I hadn't thought about the Arg refer. And I guess we can always live out of coolers again, but I thought those days were bygones. You both confirm our thoughts though that this isn't an easy fix. We'll sleep on it tonight, and decide in the am. Sounds like a new refrig may be part of the trip up north. Thanks again. ~G

We got a new Dometic frig last year from PPL motor homes. they are in Texas and have a very good online ordering website. Got the new frig within a week. It was fairly easy to install and cost about $500 less than getting from dealer.
