Identifying Reefers

I had a conversation with the owner of a newer AS yesterday that got me thinking about the refrigerator in my 1990 Excella. They were asking about tips on how to make their Dometic cool more effectively and how to quiet the fan. Which I found puzzling as my 26 year old Dometic cools just fine and there is no fan.

Did they change the refrigerator technology at some point? I assume ours works on convection which is why we need an exhaust stack and require a fan (or, is our fan dead?). Do the newer ones use a different technolgy? Someone mentioned they were thinking of installing a marine refrigerator but a limitation was that it ran only on electricity.

Thanks,
John

I have a newer (2007) Dometic 2 door refrigerator & freezer that works just fine without a fan.
Design of the cooling stack is critical for good convective flow across the condenser. It's possible later Airstream models use a fan to overcome shortcomings in the design of the stack.
