I think it takes two people one on the inside to press the button and one on the outside holding the lighter (match).
If you do a search there is someone that posted a battery operated replacment lighter that looked like it would be the very thing you need.

here's how on my '72

hi- in my opinion it's just as easy to light the things up from the access panel in back, as from inside. Doesn't take 2 people, as you can easily push the pilot button from in back with one hand, a lit match in the other- You have to be back there anyway to flip the switch and turn on the gas, might as well light er up. -tim

That's how I do it. There is a little cover (that I think was hand made) over the burner. I just hold up the lever, flip open the cover and light the burner. I hold the lever thing up for about 20 seconds then try to let it go. If the flame goes out I repeat the process again until it works. Done.

Ahhh the joys of owning a vintage unit!

My 2 cents.

The fridge in my unit is electric ignition. After turning the gas on, I light a burner, it purges propane to that point and the fridge lights quicker.

John,

Gotta love those modern units! We are going to upgrade to a modern Dometic for our trailer. The auto swap to propane will be a real treat!!
