Question Frig replacement for a 1969 31' Sovereign

We just bought a 1969 International Sovereign 31ft. It had a house frig in it and we want to put what goes in it. Would love to have an original, but wishes don't always come true. What has anyone with the same replaced theirs with?

Thanks Liz

I replaced the "dorm" size fridge in my 68 Trade Wind with a unit from Dometic. Don't remember the model number off hand but is was one that was made to replace the older fridges which are not the same dimension as the new "standard" sizes. PPL in Houston was by far the best price. I shopped around at local lumber yards and found some hardwood plywood with very similar grain as my cabinets. My wife, a genius with colors, spent an afternoon mixing stains until she got it just right and stained the door panel for the new fridge that I had cut to match the existing wood. I think it looks great, like it has always been there.

A good place to start is measuring the opening left when you remove the household refrigerator. The opening was likely modified to fit that refrigerator and it will likely to be easier to purchase a new refrigerator that is that size or slightly large so that you won't be faced with filling gaps. Replacing a refirgerator in a Sovereign is a big job, and while used ones may be available from RV salvage yards, their condition can be such that it place in question how long the unit might last. New RV refrigerators in a variety of sizes can be sourced from:
  • Dometic. The original supplier for Airstream refrigerators from the 1960s forward, they offer a large number of sizes and door configurations. You also have the option of going with 3-way operation -- something Airstream has only offered in one or two models over the years. I had a Dometic 3-way installed in my Overlander ten years ago, and I would never voluntarily go back to a 2-way RV refrigerator.
  • Norcold. Norcold is the second major supplier of RV refrigerators, and they, too, offer a large selection of models and configurations. They also offer strictly electric refrigerators something that Dometic hasn't offered as far as I know.
Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin
