Fridge Electric Problem

We have a 3ft3 Dometic fridge, operable on either electric or gas. We always choose the electric option. Typical temps are 42o in the fridge and 3o in the freezer.
On our last trip the temps rose quickly and unexpectedly to about 60o and 10o, so some cooling was being provided as ambient in the trailer was over 75o.
I checked cursory things like electrical grounds and continuity but found nothing out of the ordinary. We then switched, for the first time, to gas `power'. Normal temps. returned within a day. Upon returning home I ran tests, operating on electric and then gas, while recording various temps. The symptoms repeated themselves.
It appears that the electric system is trying to cool, but can't reach normal levels. Might this be a failing heating coil? or something in the control system? Comments please.
Thanks - Shad

Shad,

How old is the unit? Might want to do the dollar bill test on door gaskets.
