'fridge cooling
I have read a few post about cooling the fridge with fans in the back & was wondering, (crazy idea of mine) could I you use bilge blowers that are used on boats. They're used to pull air out from the boats engine compartment to vent fumes out, they pull about 120 cfm w/ 4 amp usage. I was thinking that after removing the fridge I could mount 1 or 2 on the wall inside the fridge cowl. Does this sound crazy? What'cha guys think?

Gotta say that it sounds like overkill. How much noise do those bilge blowers make? I installed a small computer cooling fan that I ordered from Circuit City for about $20. It is super quiet at 11 dB (can't hear it inside the RV). It draws less than an amp. Just MHO.

Way too much air flow and too much noise. Consider that the fridge is designed to work in most climates just by the warm air rising and pulling cooler air over the fins. Any boost by a fan will improve the cooling.
Go with a small, silent fan such as a computer fan.

What do you use as a power source for the fans? Is there an extra 12v wire inside the fridge vent area?

You can tap off the wires where the refrigerator gets its 12v. I tapped there and installed a cigarette lighter outlet. I can plug in my fans or unplug them when I want to use my 12v air compressor or in the winter.
If you put in 2 fans, wire them in series. They will run slower and totally silent while still moving plenty of air. I have a 24v fan I salvaged from a defunct laser printer that I run on 12v the same way.

In my business we use these great fans for home theater cooling. They are called a PQFan, the company that puts them out is a small outfit called home theater cooling. They have a standard 110v plug, ball bearings and are super quiet but move a good amount of air. They cost around 50.00 but I have yet to find something quieter with less vibration that moves the same amount of air, believe me I looked for a long time. We have installed them in computer cabinets, fish tank cabinets, and home theater setups. I cant say enough good things about them. I am sure you could just cut the end off and wire it to 12v if you wanted, would just run slower I imagine.

You can not use a 120v AC fan on 12v DC. Can you say "Fried!"

check out Snyder's fan and duct solution - I bought one and couldn't believe the difference in cooling performance of the refer!
You'll have to pull the refer out ofthe cabinet to install the duct and fan properly, but it was worth it to me...

I just installed this fan, which appears (by spec) to move more air and to be a little quieter than the PQFan. Also, it runs on 12v. I think I paid about $12 at Fry's Electronics. However, it doesn't move as much as the original Airstream fan; but it is silent with no vibration.

I have 2 computer fans from dead 'puters & I'm in the process of fabricating a duct & bracket. Maybe it will work if not I'm going the Snyder way. Got time to tinker around w/ it for the time being.

Curious, is there such a thing as too much air?

I don't think you can have too much airflow, but the extra drain on the batteries may make "too big" impractical.
