Fridge Burp

Before I decide to purchase a new electric houehold fridge or decide to put in a Dometic in my 75 AS I would like to know how long do you leave the fridge upside down to "burp". Mine may be totally shot. it seems to be running hot in the freezer part now while on AC. Can't figure that one out. A slight gurgle is also present and you know that smell of ammonia is present. please advise

That the "smell of ammonia" is the "smell of death"...at least for the fridge.

An ammonia leak means that the pressure system is compromised.

Big bucks to fix - it can be done but........

If it were mine, I would think it was time for a new one.

My opinion.

It is possible to purchase a rebuilt cooling core. I have talked to several people who have done it them selves. Seems like a average size core "rebuilt" is around $400-$500. They are sealed units and you have to pull your unit out to do the chageout. Here is one link, http://www.rvcool.com/CUPricing.htm ,there are others with instructions for changing out unit yourself. http://www.nucold.com/

Burping can work...but if the ammonia is still within the sealed cooling unit but just 'settled wrong' from being unsed for a long period of time or used on unlevel ground. If you can smell the ammonia, it most likely has all leaked out and burping won't do it any good. Our manual instructed turning the fridge upside down overnight a couple of times. We never smelled the ammonina leak on ours, which is why we tried the burping routine first, if we had, we won't have bothered.

It depends on the year...our's was old enough to not have an easily replaceable cooling core. We had to have ours repaired & rebuilt. It too ran about $400 dollars...but it was worth it for us to keep the vintage era fridge.
