food left in freezer (ugh the smell)

I own a 77 argosy. the refer is only 2trs old but the former owner didn't believe in cleaning after trips and left some meat in the frezzer for some time.
I have tried everything I know but can't seem to get the smell out. Is there a possible remidy or am I out a new refer. OH yea it's a Dometic. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello Brian -- I hope you're enjoying the Forums. ...or will be if we can help you out with this problem. I haven't dealt with it first hand but Googled and found a few suggestions. I can only imagine how the odor could get into every nook and cranny. Let us know if anything works for you.

Clean the refrigerator wih baking soda and water. Then spread cat litter out on a cookie tray, place a tray in the freezer and refrigerator compartment. The smell has gotten into the insulation, the cat litter should kill it in time.
It won't clear up in 24 hours.

I didn't think of charcoal or coffee. I will try these next. I tried viniger, bleach, citris(orange and lemon). The more I visit this site the more I like it! A lot of my questions have been answered before I ask! Thanks so much.

Have you already checked the fridge out? Does it actually work?

If it does, I would spend some substantial time working on this problem as a new fridge is major money!

The baking soda and water is a start, then a cleaning with hydrogen peroxide will help too. I use that process to remove skunk spray from my dogs occasionally.

When you get the freezer as good as you can, put a box of baking soda inside to absorb the rest of the odor. It isn't a bad idea to leave one in there even after the used meat aroma has been eradicated, it will help reduce any future smells you may get.

For really persistent odors, most fire and flood restoration companies will help you out - for a surprisingly low fee. They have special chemicals designed to clean up crime scenes homes where someone has died and not been discovered for weeks. Lots of times they will simply sell you a spray can of foam that you can wipe down solid surfaces with... that will instantly get rid of the rotton meat odor. Look them up in your local yellow pages.

They may also rent you an ozone generator - which is an air cleaning machine. It will literally kill all the funk in your trailer - closets, refrigerator and old smoking and cooking smells.

Brian,
One more thing to consider. Any smell will be far less noticable once the fridge is on and the frezer compartment is frozen. Once you get it "useable" then like most things in the trailer the best preventive maintenance is using it! Just sitting around is hard on all the systems.
