I don't remember have any locks on the Dometic that was in mine. The 12v
is for the control board only, not to run the refrigerator. According to the Dometic AES (Automatic Energy Selector) service manual page A-6-2, 1983 was the first year for the automatic system to switch from AC to propane. The 12 volts powers the control board for the AES.

On edit, I see in the manual a reference to priority that speaks about the priority of power sources that does refer to running on 12 volts, but this manual covers several years. I don't remember mine have the capability to operate on 12 volts, and yours is the same age. Whether it does or not, the AES system should take care of the choice for you.
