update:

i think the fix is good, ran it on electric last night. med setting... freezer quite cold, ice cubes solid.

beer is cold and the thermometer i tossed in there is just a hair under 40 degrees.

the real test will be today, i tossed another case of warm beer in there... outside temps in the eighties today.

will report back later....

further update:

took the trailer out for it's first run since the rebuild. it was in the mid 90's sunday. the fridge was doing quite well and was able to make the condensation on the cooling coils in the lower compartment freeze when set on just a hair under max!

i had the awning out and i think the shade on the exterior helps the airflow across the back of the unit.

needless to say the beer was cold!!

John, Thank you for the step by step instructions. I am going to buy a 1973 31' Excello 500 next weekend. It was owned by a past presicent of the Wally Bynum Club and is in great shape.

The owner just told me that he smelled ammonia in the refrigerator after it got cold. It has been operating on electric and is not cold at all. No more ammonia smell and the rear coils are warm. I suspect that I am going to need about a 12 pack after getting all of the supplies.

I am pretty handy but never tried something this complicated in and Airstream. I peviously woned a 1972 Landyacht but sold it when my first set of children grew up. I now have a second set with my second wife - I know, glutton - and am ready to take them all cross country ASAP.

i found out that smelling ammonia is not the only sign of failure!

loud gurgling after lighting or energizing the fridge is a sign that the unit has lost it's charge and is boiling off the residual liquid in the cooling unit.

mine never had a very strong smell unless i left the fridge closed for a couple of days. however, when i fired it up it made the telltale gurgle.

Wow...it doesn't get any better than this! Great pictorial John! Your fridge looks exactly like mine to boot. I just might try this at home....looks like the hardest part for me would be getting the darn thing out. We had the dreaded ammonia take over our fridge this past weekend. Ran great up until it's dying day. Thanks again for taking the time to post the pics!

Dometic 3604

Johns' info here is Tremendous. It should be bumped up to the list again anyway. Most of its info. will apply to my current problem.

I have the dreaded Ammonia smell big time. My Dometic is a 3604 and similar to Johns' 3804 and is in a 94 Sovereign. I am switching out the entire fridge...got a great deal from Palomino again.

I removed four front and one rear attach screws...none other seen. The 12 volt and 115 wire connects. The gas line. Ready to slide out.....NOTHING budges. Any sugestions?

P.S. I will have the old , very clean, needing a cooling unit, 3604 available for trade.
