Dometic refrigerator ices up

The fridge in our 2016 Flying Cloud 23-foot is icing up around the freezer compartment. The inside of the freezer compartment is also frosty. This happens after about 2 days of operation.



I've tried reducing the amount of contents in freezer and fridge compartments. That didn't help.



This icing up happens on propane and electric. We keep the fridge running on propane while driving to new locations. I wipe out the ice crystals, but they just come back.



We kept the fridge on continuously for 7 weeks at a time this summer and 4 weeks this fall. Could that be the problem?


Is the refrigerator dying?

The ice/frost is formed from moisture in the air entering the fridge and freezer every time the door is opened. We have to defrost often twice in the summer. The RV reefers do not self-defrost.

check the door seal. Leaking will cause frosting.

I spend the whole summer parked in Yellowstone which averages really low humidity. Usually get away with defrosting once. In the winter, we are in Florida where the humidity is, oh, 250% most days. We defrost every two to three weeks.

I know it is contra intuitive but if you fill your freezer as much as possible, you will reduce the amount of moisture laden air, reducing the rate that frost accumulates.

If you are getting ice on the fins in the refrigerator, a little spray bottle full of alcohol is handy to spray the ice off with.

Small fans on the cooling fins in the refrigerator will help in the refrigerator section and it helps distribute the cooling. We use two plastic place mats placed in the back of the freezer that allow the frost to attach to it and be easily removed.

To defrost I use the wife’s hair dryer with a towel on the bottom of the freezer to soak up the water. I check the fins and do the same when I’ve forms on them. We have a drip pan with an outside drain under the fins so it ease to deice them. It’s the humidity in the air that causes the ice not the refrigerator.

Adding a fan will prevent this problem. I live in the humid south and never have to defrost my fridge.
