rebuilt unit

Just looked up an RM3500 (couldn't find an RM3506) on the link (http://www.rvmobile.com/) and looks like under $300 would get your reefer going again, if teh RM3506 is close in cost to the RM3500 rebuild. There are detailed instruction on the site to take the cooling unit out and re-install it..... Just a thought.

As I mentioned above, the repair places cannot repair them all. The heat exchangers and condensers need to be provided by someone.
Usally they are available form the manufacturer as repir parts, but eventually the supply is gone. There is also an issue of Jig availability. The cooling unit is 1 peice and has to be built to a close tolerance, so a jig is necessary. Not all shops have the jigs for all models.

For those near Gladstone, Michigan in the U.P., dad found a place that might be able to do the work for about $250. He is still pondering what to do, but he also wanted me to send a word of thanks for the great info!

Older Dometic fridge issue closed....

Back in July, I posted that we had an ammonia leak in my dads SOB (same size fridge as the current Bambi). It's an '82 Jayco. Well, he removed the unit and took it to a repair facility. The shop had the fridge for about 6 weeks, but in the end, the unit was repaired at a cost of $253.00. $200 of which was the labor....$50 in parts and $3.00 in tax.

Runs like new....so for really the vintage folks, there is the possibility of life after deal for these ammonia based fridges. I thought for sure the unit was history, but I was wrong....she's alive and kickn' again at a cost far less than what would have been for a new one, let alone any trim adjustment work that would have been needed...not to mention the loss of the retro orange interior and the 70's looking door with the padded exterior.

We had our unit repaired by Frazier RV (phone 937-393-1740) located in Hillsboro, OH. I forget who referred us to them but it's a father and son team that have a small shop behind their home. They were very inexpensive and did a great job. We just dropped the camper off one weekend and picked it up a couple weeks later. The father is a current Airstream owner and has had several units in the past so he was quite tickled to see our "vintage" trailer.
