'67 fridge...

Just got our '67 Overlander home after buying it. There was a strong pungent smell from inside the fridge, I think the freezer actually, that about made me pass out.

Im thinking it was freon or what ever gas is used to cool it. I havent had time to look into it further, but what should I look for.

Im concerned that it may be toast.

The fridges use a concoction with ammonia to keep them cold.

If you recently sprung a leak, you would smell it. If it was a slow leak over a winter (like ours) then you may not notice the smell. Another clue is a yellow residue at the leak area which usually can be seen when you pull the fridge out...ours didn't have much discoloring, so I can't say it's always present, but if it has the yellow stain it's definately got a leak.

If you are attached to the vintage styling of the fridge, they can be repair for about $600 or so...if not, it's time for a new fridge!

Thanks for the input. I've followed every lead I could get and the only company that can/will rebuild it is Cool-Fun. Estimate over the phone was $550.

Fortunately they are just outside of LA, which isnt too far from Phoenix. With Labor day just around the corner I'll make a weekend trip to drop it off and have them ship it back.

I also plan on picking up a set of new axles from Inland while Im out there.

Ill follow up with the outcome when I get it back.

That's who we had do ours...they did a good job and it's still working! At least you won't have to pay shipping both ways...we did about $100 each way

Please post your results...I like to know whether others are as satisfied as we are, because I do recommend them often.
