1965 Safari

Help! I'm in the middle of restoring my 65 safari. I bought it gutted (most everything was there) so I have a large puzzle. I'm having trouble with the refrigerator install, mainly the gas vent. there's a notch in the countertop just above the vent but it opens into the cabinet. I don't understand as this would vent inside. Help what am I missing? Thanks, Mike. BTW anybody out there need waterheater or furnace parts? Free, you pay shipping.

The gases vent into the main plastic shroud which goes up through the roof. What I think you are looking at is the access to the top of the boiler flue, which Airstream used to make accessible so the spiral metal insert in the boiler tube could be removed for cleaning. On the intact old units I have seen this access hole was covered with a wooden, formica covered plug which could be removed for cleaning, but normally remained in place during use.

I had several old Airstreams with this access system. It is no longer provided on new units, the entire refrigerator must be removed for flue service now.
